A Voice for Marine Mammals

in Trinidad & Tobago
I'm a marine mammal bioacoustician and conservation researcher based in Trinidad & Tobago, specialising in passive acoustic monitoring, cetacean ecology, and acoustic data analysis.
My path into bioacoustics began in behaviour and linguistics. A BA in Linguistics & Psychology at USC and a master's in Cognitive Science at the University of Barcelona gave me a strong foundation in acoustic phonetics and the science of sound and communication. My unorthodox trajectory included biology, neuroscience, chemistry and engineering (electrical, biomedical, sound). This foundation led naturally to animal communication, culminating in an MSc in International Bioacoustics at Jean Monnet University in France, where I learnt bioacoustics techniques across taxa and environments from many of the world's leading researchers in the field.
I conducted my MSc research at the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute in Spain, analysing long-term PAM data of bottlenose dolphin whistle dialects in Spain and Italy, while acquiring invaluable field research techniques with dolphins, whales, and other marine life. After another intense period of fieldwork in Madagascar, studying humpback whale mother-calf behaviour with Cétamada, I returned to Trinidad. I co-founded the Trinidad & Tobago Cetacean Sighting Network, the country's only cetacean monitoring organisation.
Since then, I have worked across the professional spectrum of marine mammal science: from industry PAM operations for Shell and BP in Venezuelan and Trinidadian waters to conservation coordination for the IUCN's Southern Caribbean Upwelling System Important Marine Mammal Areas project.
I am currently developing several long-term acoustic and visual monitoring programmes for cetaceans and manatees in Trinidad and Tobago. Please see my Projects page.
My work sits at the intersection of field science, computational analysis, and conservation advocacy - bridging the offshore industry, academic institutions, students and communities to build the evidence base that marine mammals in the southern Caribbean urgently need. Fluent in English, Spanish, and French, with working knowledge of Italian, Portuguese, and Japanese, I bring a genuinely multilingual voice to regional and international collaboration.
